UNIT 1:
LETTERS
A. Aims:
- Introduce key language items followed by selected notes.
- Help students develop reading and comprehensive skills.
Skills: Main skill: Reading and Writing
Sub skills: Listening and Speaking.
Vocab: to pick someone up, to get someone home, a cold, to decide, to keep away from
B. Objectives:
- Ss know the forms of a friendly letter: heading, greeting, body, closing, signature.
- Ss will be able to write friendly letters.
C. Teaching aids:
- Textbook, boards, real pictures and charts, some envelopes and 4 letters, handouts.

Warm-up(Point at some envelopes and ask:)
What are they?
What is inside each envelope?
Expected answers from students :
They are envelopes.

2. Introduction (Elicit)
Have you ever written a letter to someone?
How many kinds of letter do you know?
Expected answers: letters of invitation, letters of regrets, letters of thanking, letters of accepting the invitation….
In most English-speaking countries, people often write letters to invite friends or relatives to some occasional activities: to the parties, to the circus, to outside entertainment…..
Do you know how to write a letter of invitation or refusal effectively?
How many parts are there in a letter?
(5 parts: heading, greeting, body of message, closing, signature.)
3. Presentation
Pre-teach vocab:
1. a good time
a. to take someone home
2. to pick someone up
b. a fun or pleasant time (Have a good time)

Divide the Ss into 4 smaller groups, then give each group an envelope (in which there are four letters) and ask them to classify them :

While-reading :
Read four letters and answer the following questions:
1.When is the circus coming again? ( after making a tour of England )
2. Who did they want to invite to go with? ( Ann )
3. When could they pick Ann up? ( at six thirty on Oct. 27 )
4. May Ann go to the circus with Mary’s family? ( Yes, she may. )
5. Does Ann go to the circus with Mary’s family? Why or Why not? (No. She’s got a cold)
6. What has Ann been thinking all day about after seeing the circus? (the animals and the tent shows )

Collect those letters and send to other groups, then ask them to write letters of accepting or refusing.
Ask the Ss who write the accepting letters write the thanking letters after they join the activity and ask the others each write a letter of invitation.
